FAMILIES SAY
Joe Grutzik, father, author of HOW TO RAISE A SUPERHERO says:
This book teaches math the way it should be taught. With this book they learn all of the foundational concepts of Algebra without any gaps or holes in the understanding of the subject…I cannot praise this book highly enough. Mrs. McCandliss’ Algebra textbook is the best math text book money can buy.
Joe’s daughter’s story: As a dare over the summer of 2005, after 5th grade in public school, Petra Independently Studied Algebra 1 using Mrs. McCandliss’ textbook. She completed the book by herself. I only helped her three or four times.
Results: 2 years advanced on math skills. She took Pre Calculus in 9th Grade, AP Calculus AB in 10th grade and is now taking AP Calculus BC in 11th grade. She got a 5 out of 5 on the AP exam. She currently has a 4.67 out of 4 GPA. Because of [Mrs. McCandliss’ Algebra 1] book, she has more Honors classes than anyone else and therefore is 1st in her class at Redondo Union High school.
This Algebra 1 textbook is the perfect independent study math book for advanced children. If you think you have a smart kid and want to challenge them with a math book that they can do without much help, all on their own, all by themselves: this is the book.
Dear Mrs. McCandliss
I miss your teaching. You explained how math works and made it easy to understand. When I got to public school for 9th grade after your class, I hated the way those teachers taught it. It didn’t make sense!!
This summer I took a Jaime Escalante Alg 2 class. They teach the way you taught; explaining all the things that are going on.
Daniel Jimenez July 2014 (*Jaime Escalante, portrayed in the movie: Stand and Deliver)
Alex Cruz Student from 2008 – 2012 Placed into calculus after doing 10th grade Algebra 2 with me.
Course of study: 6th grade: Spectrum 7 (Dark Purple) Algebra 1 – Mrs. McCandliss’ textbook, Geometry using Jacob’s Geometry, for his 8th and 9th grade year, Algebra 2 using USCMP Advanced Algebra for 10th grade.
Previous to homeschooling, Alex was in public school and totally bored in his math class. He understood and retained concepts from the first teaching, wanted to go more in depth and teachers gave him more worksheets to keep him busy.
Manuel Garcia Scored: 93% Algebra Concepts Pre-ACT test after Algebra 1

Austin Soliday
before tutoring, Austin scored low: “Probationary- Alg 1” on a private high school placement test. After 11 tutoring session, Austing placed “Honors Algebra 1.” 2006
Charissa Fleenor
used my Algebra 1 with Word Problems and scored “solidly proficient” on state algebra tests, Spring 2010.
My son Austin, who struggles with dyslexia and forms of autism,
attended EIE (excellenceineducationhomeschooling.com) during his 7th grade school year. Up to this time math was a subject he struggled in, especially in the order of process which always mixed him up creating frustration. He took Ms. McCandliss’ Math 7 class where she used the Spectrum books and a variety of techniques to teach the basic math principles leading into pre-algebra. Austin did great in Dorothy’s class and for the first time in his life was able to complete math problems independently. When it came time to introduce the pre-algebra concepts, Dorothy used a set of books by Fisher, which were fantastic and relatable to my son. Again he was learning in a way he could understand. Today he is attending public high school and he is in Algebra 1. His teachers are impressed with his progress due to his struggles, but he is in fact progressing and independent. We attribute a lot of this ability to Dorothy and her way of teaching with multiple learning styles, so each student understands. We are so grateful for Dorothy and our time with her. Truly Dorothy, we believe this and are so grateful and thankful.
Sincerely, Jennifer and Austin November 2012

Hi Mrs. McCandliss!
I just wanted to say thanks for the great year. It was really awesome to see my math grade go from F to B. I tell so many people about you because you’ve helped me ssssooo much. Before I hated math so much that I would cry for hours! And thanks to you that did’t happen this year! BTW you’re my favorite teacher at EIE!
Thanks again! -Trinity

I am very pleased with the rigor with which you teach your classes. You emphasize critical thinking as opposed to memorizing procedures and following directions.

Kaitlyn’s 2012-2013 School year
Kaitlyn had little success in math and disliked it greatly. She received help from two different tutors from a reputable company for two consecutive years but made little progress and disliked math. She became anxious every time we opened the book.
Once she began with Dorothy, things quickly began to look up. Kaitlyn’s attitude changed quickly, She was happy to go to tutoring sessions, and left encouraged. She began to make more progress and was even excited to be challenged.
We can’t thank her enough. We highly recommend her.
